Fun with Playdough Creations + Recipe

Today the princess and I went at the playdough for a while. I found once she had turned 2 and a half she was already over playdough... But this year, To keep it interesting, we added to our playdough box things like pop sticks, googly eyes, feathers, small square boxes (like when you buy a very small box of teabags), rubber cupcake cases and colorful jewels. Now she loves to spend alot of time creating all kinds of creatures. The picture below is of a birdie, which she requested I make, and her own creation of a "little boy". 

She also likes to make pretend cupcakes with the rubber cases, and uses her teaset to serve me "afternoon tea". She has also made caves and boats and placed her little Lego people inside them.

My Son likes to eat playdough. Mmmm. 

Here is a simple recipe for playdough that we use:

HOMEMADE PLAYDOUGH:

• 2 Cups plain flour
• One cup salt
• 2 tbsp cream of tartar
• 2 tbsp oil
• 2 cups water 
• Food colouring

In a large bowl mix the flour, salt and cream of tartar, then add the oil, water and food colouring. If you want to do two colours, or more, separate the mixed ingredients into separate clear cups first, then add colours. Then you will need to cook it in batches also so that the colours dont mix, which is what we do.

Warm up a large frypan... On a low - medium setting. Place mixture into frypan and cook like scrambled eggs until it all lumps up into playdough!

First it will be yuck like this:

Then it will look even worse like this:

Just keep stirring and scraping all the random bits together.

It will then really clump together like this, and look less scary:

Finally, it will be playdough. Use the ball of playdough to scrape up any bits on the pan.

Don't worry if the colour looks a bit pale or patchy. After a quick knead and once it's cooled off the colour will be fine.

So, Allow to cool a bit, knead for a minute or two so that it feels nice and smooth. There you have it, playdough. Enough for two kids. 

This batch immediately became "Larry boy and bob the tomato" haha so cute!

Involve your little one, they are always amazed at a sloppy mess turning into playdough. My daughter likes to stirr the colours in. She's looking forward to being old enough to stirr it herself on the stove (she knows its off limits for now)

The possibilities with playdough are endless! I hope this has given you some inspiration.
